In 1851 Abiel Chandler, a Harvard graduate and businessman of Walpole, N.H., bequeathed $50,000 to the Trustees of Dartmouth College for the establishment and support of a school or department "in the practical or useful arts of life", such as civil engineering, architecture and drawing, and modern languages, and stipulated that a board of visitors be entrusted with the interpretation of the provisions of his will. Asa D. Smith was the seventh president of Dartmouth College; he was in office from 1863 to 1877. He was born in Amherst, N.H. in 1804. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1830 and from the Andover Theological Seminary in 1834. In 1849 he received his DD from Williams College, and in 1864 he received his LL D from the University of New York. He died in Hanover, N.H. in 1877. From the description of Papers, 1865-1876.
